how to repair a thermostat wire connecting to an air conditioner unit - outside air conditioner
The thermostat wire running between the air-conditioning unit and the furnace is easily damaged, as it is usually exposed along the refrigeration line running between the evaporator coil above the furnace and the air-conditioning unit.
If this wire is damaged, you need to replace the whole wire.
This involves disconnecting the wires for both units and reconnecting the new thermostat wires.
Power off the stove and air conditioning equipment.
To be safe, turn them off from the circuit breaker panel.
Open the furnace access panel and find the terminals connected by the thermostat wire.
The thermostat wire that serves the stove is the one that has two separate wires inside, red and white.
Unscrew the red and white lines from the terminals to pull the whole line out of the furnace.
Walk outside the air conditioning unit and open the access panel.
Note that the red and white wires are connected to the air conditioner with wire nuts.
Unscrew these wire nuts and remove the red and white lines.
Discard the old thermostat wire and run the new thermostat wire between the stove and the air conditioner.
Usually, the wire runs with the refrigeration pipe and is a zippertied to it.
Use the stripping machine to peel 2 to 3 inch of the external insulation sheath off the thermostat wire.
This will expose the red and white lines inside.
Remove 1/4 of the insulation material from the end of these wires.
Do this on both the stove and the air conditioning unit.
Connect the wire at the furnace terminal.
The red line is connected to the "R" terminal and the white line is connected to the "C" terminal.
Connect the wires to the air conditioner.
The direction in which the wires are connected to the air conditioner is not important.
Connect them to the short wire tail fiber on the device with a wire nut.
Turn on the access panel again and power on the device.
Test the air conditioner by switching the thermostat to cooling mode and lowering the temperature.
The unit should operate normally.
