The controversial housing insulation program killed four people and nearly 90 home fires, but was abolished by troubled federal environment minister Peter garlitte.
It was replaced by a new "renewable energy" program that included stricter safety regulations and reduced rebates for roof cells and solar systems.
The family of the dead installer said garlitte's action came too late, while industry insiders expect 6000 people to be out of work.
Opposition Leader Tony Abbott believes the minister must go now.
"If you are going to give up this project, you have to fire the minister in charge of this project," Mr Abbott said in western Sydney . ".
The opposition also beat Mr. garlitte on a report warning him of fire, fraud and quality risks.
Mr. garlitte submitted documents that were not dated.
Compiled by top-
Minte Ellison law firmtoday.
Greg Hunt, a spokesman for the opposition environment, said that Garrett had been "hidden" for more than six months.
Under the new renewable energy program, homeowners will be able to apply for a $1000 rebate after paying for insulation.
Prior to that, the installer received a $1200 rebate.
Mr garlitte said the change would hit "shonky operators" who have been selling insulation doors "--to-door.
Meanwhile, the government's rebate for solar hot water will be reduced from $1600 to $1000.
Refunds for heat pump systems were cut from $1000 to $600.
To participate in the new program, insulation installers will have to re-register and pay a cash deposit of $10,000.
Training and safety requirements are also more stringent.
Sister of 16-year-
Old Reuben Barnes, who died of installing insulation in Queensland in last November, said her family was grateful that the project had been canceled.
Sonny Barnes says Mr garlitte's focus on industry warnings has been too long.
"We really think this happened after Reuben. died)
"If it's not the first," MS Barnes said.
We think it's too late now.
Caused damage.
"Wendy Sweeney, whose son Mitchell died earlier this month, expressed similar sentiments.
"Four young people should not die before things happen," she told ABC radio . ".
The fact that the new plan is more stringent does not mean that the original plan failed, Mr garlitte said.
"I also didn't give in to the pressure, although the media have been hyping on the issue for the past week or so," he told Sky News . ".
"Nor did I respond to what the leader of the opposition has warned.
The most recent admission by the minister of environment, he said, is that he did not think of the $3.
7 billion the plan was abused.
"I am free to admit that I don't think there will be so many shonky installers who will take advantage of the program and will not follow the guidelines that have been properly developed.
The new insulation plan will not begin until June 1.
Abbott said it meant that more than 6000 people might suddenly lose their jobs.
"There are also many good enterprises there, and there are also many bad enterprises --so-
"Business is good," he said . "
"Why are good people punished with bad people.
"This is the view of the insulation board of Australia and New Zealand.
Yesterday, it said the closure of the program "will result in the unemployment of at least 6000 Australians" and "very heavy"
Replied.
Council chief executive Dennis Darcy did not comment today.
Garlitte acknowledged that jobs would be reduced, but said that affected workers would receive immediate assistance under the government's redundancy contract.
The minister also insisted that he would not resign.
"I plan to stay and do my job in the future.
